![]() ![]() It’s no longer psychological, and the fact that a second doppleganger shows up right away just cheapens it. It of course validates what Millicent Barnes had said, but that kind of makes it less interesting. None of the effects of The Twilight Zone have really aged too well, but they’re less bothersome in small doses. The doubling effect with Martin Milner is very poorly done. After they take her, he notices another version of himself and goes and chases after him. Martin Milner’s character stays to comfort her until the next bus arrives in the morning, but really he calls a psychiatric hospital to come take her. Unfortunately, this is the last moment I really like about the episode. The camera reveals another Vera Miles seated in the bus. Eventually, the bus comes, and as the two of them are headed to it, she looks up and screams, running away. He thinks she’s crazy, but he goes along, believing her to be harmless. She explains her situation, and then her theory that somehow there is another world that occasionally intersects with ours. ![]() In the next act, she meets a stranger played by Martin Milner ( Adam-12), who attempts to take care of a woman who is clearly not well. This also leads to one of my favorite shots of the series, when she looks at the mirror of the bathroom with the door open and sees another version of herself seated where she had been seated. When she heads into the bathroom, the bathroom attendant talks about how she had been there before, when she hadn’t. She notices a bag that looks just like hers, but she insists isn’t hers. The story is that of a doppleganger, and I like that the episode takes its time to build suspense. She asks about the bus, and the attendant reacts angrily, saying that he’s sick of her coming up and asking him about it. “Mirror Image” stars Vera Miles ( Psycho, The Searchers) as Millicent Barnes, a woman that is just waiting for a bus.
